M600 – second mobile phone based on UIQ 3
February 06, 2006;
UIQ and Series 60 are directly competing with each other within Symbian camp - good for Windows Mobile! M600 is however a very interesting smartphone...

Ronneby, Sweden, 6 February 2006 M600 is the second UIQ 3 enabled phone based on Symbian 9, today announced by Sony Ericsson. The M600 is a phone and messaging device, a fully-specified email tool and mobile phone rolled into an extremely stylish, slim device. By using the UIQ open software platform and user interface, multitasking – for example browsing the Internet whilst making a voice call – is now a reality.

“Sony Ericsson has now brought two very different products to the market, based on UIQ 3, targeting different users and lifestyles which both happen to benefit from the overall flexibility that UIQ 3 can offer” says Johan Sandberg, CEO at UIQ Technology. “We are delighted to continue supporting Sony Ericsson in creating successful mobile phones for different target groups."

UIQ 3 is a flexible platform allowing mobile phone manufacturers to differentiate and create a diversified portfolio of phones, all based on one single codeline. UIQ gives the mobile phone the look and feel, the interaction and graphical capabilities and also support for applications. Manufacturer specific extensions and application programming interfaces (API’s) can be added to UIQ 3, allowing developers to take advantage of special features and to optimize their applications for specific phones.

“UIQ gives us great flexibility to create differentiation in our portfolio and gives a great interaction experience to our customers" says Steve Walker, Vice President Product Marketing at Sony Ericsson.

The M600 can easily be operated using one or two hands and the phone gives versatile options on how to perform messaging tasks. For example the large dual function keyboard makes for easy messaging input and is also the keypad for number buttons. Reading emails and viewing high quality video and graphics content is made easy with the 3-way Jog Dial and a 2.6” QVGA screen, capable of handling 262K colors. Also employing a touch screen, it interacts with a keyboard stylus to provide true PDA-style input method.

The M600 will be commercially available in Q2 2006. For pictures and technical specifications, please visit www.uiq.com/M600se
