Mobile phone network access coming to London tube June 01, 2005; London's underground train system is called "tube" and it looks like passengers using it will be soon able to use their phones also underground ! The first phase will be placing microcells (base stations with small power) in stations of the tube (estimated cost: 250 million British pounds) and then also to tunnels between stations (estimated cost: 750 million British pounds) . As of now O2, T-Mobile, and Orange expressed interest in these planns outlined by Transport for London (TfL). However still it is not final whether extending mobile phone coverage to the famous London's tube will proceed... Please note that in some cities and countries mobile network access is already possible: for example in Berlin (in the so called "U-Bahn") in Germany for some networks! Idea of mobile phone network access in unterground train systems is therefore not new but London's tube is very big, partially very old, and complicated and mobile phone coverage could cost there more than in other cities...
