Swapcom World-First in Automatic Device Discovery

By implementing an automatic device discovery solution into its Device Management Center package in 2004, Swapcom has achieved a World-first in mobile management.

Swapcom “Device Management Center” is a server-side software tool which increases efficiency in device provisioning for multimedia services. Automatic device discovery on the network is achieved either by means of a Java Sim Card application which retrieves information directly from the subscriber device, or by an SS7 link to core network elements.

As mobile technology becomes more complex, the success of data services is largely dictated by users’ ability to use them. With automatic device discovery and configuration on the Swapcom platform, no time in data service delivery is wasted. Bulk over-the-air configurations for services can be sent to the entire subscriber base, or to selected profiles. Bulk provisioning is an important means of ensuring seamless swaps in operator IP addresses. By generating full server-side statistics on handset and service usage of all customers across the network, Swapcom Device Management Center also enables efficient control of the operator device inventory, yet remains totally invisible for the end-user. As soon as an un-configured mobile device is attached to the network, the Swapcom platform can trigger WAP, MMS or e-mail service settings, according to the type of mobile and customer profile. Using algorithms to determine device capabilities and subscriber rights, the Swapcom Device Management Center configures only the relevant settings, over-the-air, to the mobile data device. Enhanced device management encourages service take-up in a totally transparent manner, thus generally boosting customer satisfaction. The passive role of the end-user is in itself a major benefit for the operator in that it reduces the number of handset configuration queries over the phone to Customer Relations Management, estimated at an Industry average of $5.50 per CRM call.

Swapcom Device Management Center includes a comprehensive database of handset functionalities, constantly updated in line with commercial releases. Forward thinking, Swapcom is now focusing on the growing firmware challenges faced by operators. The forthcoming version of Device Management Center will include enhanced firmware patch delivery over the air (FOTA) for bug correction and updates available to the vast majority of handsets on the market.
