Samsung brings 5 megapixel cellphone to market in October 2004 - Samsung SCH-S250
October 21, 2004;
While many of us still must live with cellphones with VGA resolution (0.3 megapixel = 640x480 pixels), Samsung is progresing rapidly with new, technologically superior cell phones.

Not long ago - just this year - Samsung has released the first cell phone from this company with built-in Bluetooth - so Samsung was not quite a leader technologically in Bluetooth. After all Bluetooth was not popular in Asia...

However as far as cameras in cell phones are concerned Samsung is a leader. Since October 2004 Samsung will be selling in its home country - Korea - the first cell phone with buil-in 5 megapixel camera: Samsung SCH-S250. Here are some highlights about this cell phone:
  • dimensions: 115 x 49.5 x 18.5mm; weight: 116g
  • cellular telephony system: cdma2000 1x
  • display: 2.0-inch, 16 million colors, QVGA TFD LCD with resolution of 240 x 360 pixels
  • built-in camera with 5 megapixel resolution
  • 64-tone polyphonic sound
  • 92 MB of internal memory
  • RS-MMC memory card slot (card of size 32 MB included in the package)
  • possibility to record video up to 100 minutes
  • TV output - to connect to TV set
  • IrDA - infrared port
  • MP3 playback possibility
Commentary: nowadays 7 to 8 megapixel is becoming standard in regular digital cameras so no wonder that cell phones are catching up and reaching 5 megapixel that by now was reserved for top notch digital cameras. And since nowadays no-name cheap digital cameras with 4 megapixels are available for around 100 Euro (or 150 USD) clearly cell phones must catch up because otherwise it will be difficult to convince end users to pay premium price for multiple-megapixel camera phones if stand-alone digital cameras are so cheap...
