GSM Association and Ovum announce market data venture: Wireless Intelligence
July 09, 2004;
Wireless IQ? Kind-of...

The GSM Association and Ovum have signed an agreement to offer a market data and advisory service to the mobile industry. Drawing on the combined strengths of the global trade association that represents 640 second and third generation mobile operators and Ovum’s unique expertise where telecoms, software and IT services converge, the venture aims to become the definitive source of accurate, official data for the wireless industry.

Branded Wireless Intelligence, the venture will broaden the scope of market data to include relevant data on advanced multimedia, next generation messaging and data services in addition to offering general subscriber growth and wireless market intelligence. Reliability, consistency, accuracy, and ease-of-use will be core values of the web-based service that will launch its first offerings in Q4, 2004.

“Wireless Intelligence meets a need identified by the GSMA Board,” said Rob Conway, CEO and Member of the Board of the GSM Association. “The venture goal is to offer improved and enhanced metrics and business performance data beyond what is currently available in the mobile industry.” The Association’s Board is made up of board-level representatives of 21 operators from around the world including the world’s twelve largest operator groups measured by number of customers.

Created in response to industry demand, the Wireless Intelligence service will be of interest to the operator community, mobile phone and wireless device manufacturers, network vendors, regulators, system integrators, wireless ASPs, content providers and aggregators, financial institutions and consulting organisations.

“Ovum already provides excellent analysis on wireless data and content services while the GSM Association is firmly established as a trusted custodian of sensitive operator information, “ said Martin Garner, Director Research Programmes at Ovum. “By combining these strengths, Wireless Intelligence will drive innovation by giving operators the tools to measure their own performance against national and international norms.”

Collaboration between the venture and the GSMA’s operator members will enable Wireless Intelligence to provide benchmarking insights against national and international trends, while protecting the integrity and confidentiality of data provided by individual operators.

Wireless Intelligence will be accessible on-line at www.wirelessintelligence.com.
