BenQ beats Nokia... April 30, 2004; ... at first just in Taiwan, but hopefully soon also elsewhere. BenQ has superb Pocket PC phone coming soon, so it well may happen... BenQ Takes 3rd Place In Mobile Phone In Taiwan, Replacing Nokia BenQ Corp. has sold 70,000 mobile phones in March, taking 13.2 percent in local market share, replacing Nokia dropped to 11 percent from 14 percent in February at second place. Total mobile phone sales in March reached 495,000 units and Motorola maintained its top spot with a 21% share. BenQ's mobile phones models S660C and the S670C are popular among local residents. The S660C has reached 100,000 units in Taiwan since the model was launched in early December 2003. BenQ plans to launch 14 new models this year, including the Z150, the A500 and the P30 to be on store shelves by the end of the second quarter, In March, BenQ's mobile phone shipment reached 1.5 million, totaled shipping 4.1 million units to its OEMs clients including Motorola during the first quarter. The shipment of Motorola's C200 and V291 models has helped BenQ to attain a monthly shipment of 200,000 units. The first-quarter profit doubled on gains from selling assets and increased profit from handset sales. Net income jumped to NT$3.1 billion from NT$1.5 billion a year ago. Sales rose two-thirds to NT$38.7 billion. Currently, BenQ set on China's market with its cooperation with Chinese Electronics Corporation Telecom (CECT) and expecting to a monthly shipment of 50,000 units. Source: Computex Online.
