Google Gears 0.4 for Windows Mobile released, first mobile websites use it ! August 23, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Google Gears, which is a plugin for various Internet browsers, is available for various operating system, but among mobile operating systems only Windows Mobile is supported. No support for Symbian or Nokia. By now it was interesting mostly for developers of web applications, but now thanks Google's deals with some companies, it is usable also for end users! Google mobile divisions (Android, Gears mobile, etc.) are located in London, UK, so no wonder that Google takes care of British market and now if you are in UK (and in some other countries) and you own Windows Mobile phone, you can use m.lastminute.com service combined with Google Gears Mobile:
More information about latest version: Today we're launching the Gears Geolocation API for mobile and desktop browsers, while two third-party developers are launching the first location-enabled web apps using this API on Windows Mobile. One of the most popular travel sites in the Europe, lastminute.com, has now location-enabled their new mobile restaurant finder to help you find restaurants near you without requiring you to type in where you are. If you're in the UK, just go to fonefood at m.lastminute.com, click the "Find your location" link on the home page, select the type of restaurant you want, and lastminute.com will automatically work out which neighbourhood and city you are in and find matching restaurants. Commentary: since Google Android -powered phones are not on the market yet, Google has picked Windows Mobile as the best smartphone platform for their applications obviously. Sybian fanboys who thinks that Windows Mobile is not "mass market operating system" are totally wrong - it is not only mass market but also very good one!
