Palm has big plans for Windows Mobile and ordered 5 million phones at Compal August 14, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Compal many years ago was producing the first "developer smartphone" that Micrsosoft was selling then for 600 dollars ... ... but now Compal - a company located in Taiwan - is specializing in Original Device Manufacturing (ODM) and apparently it makes Motorola Q smartphone for Motorola and it makes Palm smartphones for Palm. The fact that Palm has already ordered 5 million smartphones means, that Palm is probably preparing a GSM/UMTS/HSDPA version of Treo 800w, probably to be called Treo 850. Note that Compal is specialized in manufacturing of Windows Mobile phones and Palm gives manufacturing orders for Palm OS -based smartphones to other manufacturers. By now everybody thought that Treo smartphones powered by Windows Mobile are manufactured by HTC but it may well be that Palm is in the process of switching of manufacturers. Maybe side effect of this would be that HTC would start making at last smartphones in form factor with front facing QWERTY keyboard (for single handed usage) and touch-screen - a form factor that HTC has been avoiding by now in order to get manufacturing orders from Palm..
