Google Maps 2.2 for Windows Mobile released - now with transit directions ! July 31, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Previously Google Maps had capability to show driving directions from point A to point B. Now with version 2.2, available also as native application for Windows Mobile (not Java midlet!), Google adds ability to find transit directions, i.e. which bus or train or other public transport to take, including walking, to get from point A to B! Example: instead of taking taxi from Reading train station to Microsoft's main campus in UK, one can take bus number 64:
Unfortunately as far as London is concerned, transport over tube (i.e. underground train) is not considered by this program at all, as you can see it in this video, that also is demonstrating an overall operation of Google Maps for Windows Mobile: ... so in some situations this program is not showing the optimal transit directions! Nonetheless it may be very useful as it saves you a time and while traveling to distant locations you don't have to find out, which website shows local public transport schedules and routes. Note: Google Maps supports positioning both through "My Location" feature that uses triangulation based on local cellular network or through GPS. However Google Maps by no means supports turn-by-turn navigation where you get, constantly updated, directions where to turn, how to go, to get to the destination. To get Google Maps 2.2 for Windows Mobile you must use your Windows Mobile phone - what is natural because this program anyway stores maps on Google servers and connects constantly anyway - and you must use Internet Explorer in your Windows Mobile phone and open in it the following address: www.google.com/gmm (GMM = Google Maps Mobile).
