Microsoft is scaling up Windows Mobile March 21, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R. Once you notice that Windows Vista runs only 2 hours on HTC Shift but Windows Mobile can run days, not just hours, you realize that Windows Mobile actually would be good fit not just for PDAs and mobile phones (smartphones) but also for mobile personal computers and for mobile Internet devices (MID) or Internet tablets. Just in March 2008 (this month!) Microsoft has hired Len Kawell and in his job description one can notice that scaling up Windows Mobile for use on larger devices is one of his responsibilities: Len Kawell is a Distinguished Engineer in the Mobile Communications Business Group, working on the development of several aspects of the Windows mobile platform. Kawell is defining the application model for occasionally connected rich Internet applications in the mobile environment. He is also responsible for scaling Windows Mobile to new kinds of kinds of devices with larger screens and faster processors – also known as Mobile Internet Devices, or MIDs. The original source of this story is on Microsoft's page about Len Kawell and note that we are linking here to it, instead of linking to some intermediary irrelevant pages as most other news sources do... Conclusion: it is great, that thanks to popularity of Internet tablets and devices that fit between notebook and mobile phone, Microsoft sees even more usage for Windows Mobile, but maybe the Windows Mobile 7 should first be released and at least try to challenge iPhone first? Hopefully Microsoft will not forget that mobile phone market is many times bigger than Internet tablets... and thus should be more important.
