CeBIT 2008: Microsoft
March 07, 2008 [General] | By Edward J. R.

Every year at CeBIT Microsoft has big stand in Hall 4. Our long-year complaining that Microsoft should have a stand also in Hall 26 (that is devoted to mobile phones) unfortunately didn't bring any change and also this year Windows Mobile is reduced to 1-2 table presentation as tiny part of Microsoft stand. Microsoft still doesn't understand importance of Hall 26.

Anyway when approaching Microsoft stand at CeBIT 2008 from afar one could notice Windows Mobile logo on the banner above:

... but stuff presented under this banner were media PCs and consumer electronics like Xbox but not Windows Mobile!

Interestingly we have noticed there guys with both "Microsoft" and "Microsoft Evangelist" on their shirts:

... and seeing the word "Evangelist" the "Church of Microsoft" comes to mind...

Anyway the proper sub-stand of Windows Mobile was hidden deep inside of the big Microsoft stand and looked like this:

And here is a close-up to list of partners (note: not all Windows Mobile phone makers and operators are here! ... and since when Plantronics makes anything Windows Mobile specific?):

Windows Mobile phones were presented on 2 tables behind the flat screen TV with Windows Mobile logo above it:

At the tables many Windows Mobile phones were present and we will not publish photos of all of them here. Suffice to say that Samsung i780 is now on sale across Europe:

... but this Windows Mobile phone from HP is not particularly interesting (lack of QWERTY keyboard!):

Also Palm was present but it looks like Palm has given up fight in high-end smartphone market segment (for God's sake we have 2008 and Palm still doesn't have a phone with GPS and WiFi - Palm is totally lagging behind everybody) and relies on sales of low-end cheap smartphones like Palm Treo 500v:

Also E-TEN X800 was present and it still remains (yet) the only (available commercially) Windows Mobile phone with high resolution display (VGA or more) and built-in GPS and 3G all in one device:

Conclusion: Microsoft's presence at CeBIT was focused on enterprise software and many business partners of Microsoft in area of enterprise software were present with their sub-stands at Microsoft stand too. Windows Mobile apparently still is a tiny unimportant part of Microsoft business operations and the fact that after so many years Microsoft still doesn't have stand in Hall 26 (the one devoted to mobile phones) shows that mobility is still not treated seriously by Microsoft.
