CeBIT 2008: first-hand report about T-Mobile March 05, 2008 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. There is no need to pretend otherwise: the biggest Windows Mobile novelty of CeBIT 2008 was presented by T-Mobile and it was T-Mobile MDA compact IV phone, that was announced in combination with announcement of Microsoft's deal with T-Mobile about Microsoft System Center Mobile Device Manager. Here we present real-life photos of T-Mobile MDA compact IV, photos of all other Windows Mobile phones presented at the stand of T-Mobile and other impressions... As members of press, we have entered CeBIT 2008 much before 9:00, i.e. before broader public is allowed to enter, so we have been able to get a peek at internal meeting where boss of Deutsche Telekom corporation (that owns T-Mobile too) was speaking to employees:
Their boss was underlying importance of passion and he gave awards to 2 employees who managed to get most deals at the show. Funny thing was that he was speaking 2 sentences in German and then 2 in English and again 2 in German and 2 in English and so on... In Germany T-Mobile has exclusivity for Apple iPhone, so clearly iPhone was prominenty displayed at their stand:
We used this opportunity to make fun of slow connectivity of iPhone, namely it can connect to Internet only through EDGE (note letter "E") when it comes to cellular networks:
Note: once Opera Mobile 9.5 will be released in few weeks, also Windows Mobile will have full Internet browsing capability. The fact of the matter is that T-Mobile was showing only 3 Windows Mobile phones at CeBIT 2008. First one and the one easily accesible was T-Mobile MDA Touch (i.e. T-Mobile-branded HTC Touch Dual):
... that was presented with stereo headset indicating consumer and not business market! Interestingly T-Mobile was underlining that user interface of this Windows Mobile phone is "similar to PC":
Also T-Mobile Ameo 16GB was presented:
... and it offers new design combined with internal memory increased to 16 GB. Finally let's take a look at T-Mobile MDA compact IV, that is the first Windows Mobile phone made by HTC, that offers VGA display in pocket-size case (combined with HSDPA, GPS and 4GB of Internal memory):
It offers also front-facing camera for video calling:
... and 3 megapixel camera with autofocus for picture taking on the back:
The power button is placed on the top:
Conclusion: while (inside of Germany) T-Mobile is commited to Apple iPhone, it continues to release new Windows Mobile phones and it sells big amounts of these Windows Mobile phones - branded by T-Mobile of course. As it was mentioned by Peter Chou, CEO of HTC, it was T-Mobile and Orange thanks to which HTC achieved breakthrough and it looks like cooperation between HTC and T-Mobile still thrives resulting in more and more Windows Mobile phones! The MDA compact IV phone can become a strong competitor for iPhone and it's configuration - lack of QWERTY keyboard combined with big internal memory and VGA display in small size - indicates that it may be a mass market phone for consumers... and not another business phone.
