Meet Windows Mobile 5 !
May 10, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.
First official information about the next Windows Mobile:
- official name of the the next Windows Mobile after Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition is "Windows Mobile 5", not "Windows Mobile 2005" - during development the name was "Windows Mobile codename Magneto"
- to develop software for Windows Mobile 5, developers will have to install "Windows Mobile 5 SDK" that is an add-on to Visual Studio 2005. Without Visual Studio 2005 it will not be possible to develop applications for Windows Mobile 5. By now developers could develop software for Windows Mobile also with free eVC++ = embedded Visual C++ - now commercial Visual Studio will be needed but single language version will suffice (i.e. for example C# or Visual Basic .NET) and starting price will be 299 USD, not around 1000 USD as previously (for .NET Compact Framework applications). This SDK includes emulators that run Windows Mobile 5 in various resolutions and interestingly these emulators can run without Visual Studio at all - so if you are not a developer you will be able to use these emulators for your own purposes too (like
for exampe: getting acquainted with Windows Mobile 5 software before buying a device powered by this software).
- Windows Mobile 5 requires new version of ActiveSync - version 4.0 (by now "3.8" was the most up to date version of ActiveSync).
- mobile versions of Office applications that are included in Windows Mobile 5 are more user friendly, have other names and offer more features: Excel Mobile, Word Mobile, and PowerPoint Mobile Viewer.
- Windows Mobile 5 offers several new APIs, including common camera API, so that developers can write camera aware applications without worrying by which vendor given device was manufactured - by now each vendor offered different way of accessing camera.
- signing of applications to access privileged APIs or to run programs will still be available as a feature of Windows Mobile 5 - and it is also up to cellular network operators what level of locking they will use in Windows Mobile 5.
- Bluetooth in Windows Mobile 5 has been improved: for example it will be possible to use ActiveSync over Bluetooth with more than one PC.
