April 03, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R.

Previously withhold and confidential, now the user's guide for HP iPAQ Pocket PC hw6500 has been released and it even contains detailed (at last official) specifications of this phone! In this story we quote these now official specifications and provide you direct download link to the manual (PDF format). Warning: this phone has display of very low resolution (240x240, here: dialog with HP Profiles application):

iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger Pocket PC phone

... very slow processor and lacks built-in Wi-Fi.... so this is not a phone for high end users...

Official specifications of iPAQ hw6500 Mobile Messenger :
  • processor: Intel PXA272 312 MHz (very slow!!!)
  • SDARAM: 64 MB (46 MB user accessible) - nowadays 128 MB is standard in top-notch Pocket PC phones
  • ROM: 64 MB Flash ROM
  • operating system: Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for Pocket PC Phone Edition (not Windows Mobile magneto)
  • iPAQ File Store (nonvolatile memory): up to 8-MB Storage
  • display: 56x46 mm (2.205 x 2.205 inches) transflective TFT, 240x240 pixels, 64K-color support, touchscreen - very low resolution - many programs for Pocket PC will not work and Internet browsing with such low resolution will be cumbersome
  • 2 card slots: SD/IO slot for Wi-Fi cards (1) and memory cards and mini-SD slot (2) only for memory cards:

  • manufactured in Taiwan by HTC
  • built-in camera with 1.2 megapixels and LED flash
  • keyboard: integrated (built-in) Qwerty thumb keyboard with 26 LED backlit alpha-numeric keys, one Fucntion key and two application buttons - Calendar and Start menu buttons
  • Bluetooth (probably with drivers from WIDCOMM because also PAN profile is supported - accessing network through Bluetooth LAN access point is possible with this phone; with Bluetooth stack from Microsoft it's impossible)
  • Infrared (IrDA) - up to 115.2 Kbps
  • cellular interface: GSM (quad-band) / GPRS / EDGE
  • built-in GPS receiver and navigation software (from TomTom)
  • physical specifications:
    • Length: 118.0 mm (4.645 inch)
    • Width: 71.0 mm (2.795 inch)
    • Depth: 21.0 mm (0.826 inch)
    • Weight: 165 g (5.82 oz)
The early version of user manual and other information are vailable at FCC website here. For your convenience this user manual is also available at our servers here.

Conclusions: not everybody needs Wi-Fi but extremely low resolution of the display in this phone will put off many potential customers. Built-in QWERTY keyboard with backlit and built-in GPS may however sway many people who just need these 2 features the most.

If you are interested in this phone then you will be able to buy it for around 700 Euro (850 USD) near the end of this month (April 2005). One of the first real-life photos of this phone you can find
