Windows Mobile at Total Mobile
March 27, 2005 [General] | By Edward J. R.
British magazines "What Cellphone" and "Smart Phone" joined forces and result is "new" magazine under new name "Total Mobile":
In the first issue (or rather issue 129 because all older issues of "What Cellphone" are counted) the Total Mobile describes and reviews also cell phones powered by Windows Mobile from Microsoft. While for many people online news sources are primary way of gathering information about mobile phones, still many people prefer paper magazines and magazines that write about all mobile phones, not just specific platform... In this news item we review of aricles and other information bits about Windows Mobile from issue 129 of Total Mobile:
Right away, on the cover of this magazine you can observe that apart from other shorter information bits about Windows Mobile, it contains also 2 big reviews of Motorola MPx220 and i-mate SP3i:
On page 30 and 31 you can read detailed review of Motorola MPx220. Here is how page 30 looks like:
Some highlights of this review of Motorola MPx220:
- overall results: 84% - good but not very good
- as "pros" are mentioned: strong line up of facilities, 1.23 megapixel camera, easy to use large keys
- as "cons" are mentioned: odd design, faster processor would have been good, camera not as good as rivals
- general impressions: despite having excellent voice quality, quad-band and better camera, Motorola MPx220 doesn't feel as elegant as Orange SPV C500.
On page 32 and 33 you can find detailed review of i-mate SP3i. Here a snapshot of the page 32:
Highlights from this review of i-mate SP3i:
- as you can see on scan above the i-mate SP3i scored award "Total Mobile Best Buy Smartphone 2005"
- overall result: 86%
- as "pros" are mentioned: downloadable smartphone software, miniature size and good looks, built-in camcorder
- as "cons" are mentioned: memory card hidden under battery, no keyboard or handwriting recognition, memory card costs extra
- general impressions: i-mate SP3i has only camera with VGA resolution (not megapixel) but this camera produces good results, better than many other VGA cameras. Total mobile wrongly claims that Bluetooth can't be used for transfering files to other phones and PC. Sound quality during voice phone calls: average with sound "a tad muffled". Delivers smartphone capabilities in a small package - so no need to carry bigger device just because you wanted to have smartphone.
This issue of Total Mobile mentions Windows Mobile also in other places:
- page 07: a) T-Mobile MDA IV is mentioned and shortly described and ability to do video calling with this phone is underlined. b) the fact that O2 UK has just released O2 Xda IIi is mentioned - and shortly described as new PDA phone that adds faster processor, megapixel camera and built-in Wi-Fi.
- page 16: under misleading title "New OS for smartphones" the new Windows Mobile smartphone reference design "Peabody" from Flextronics is described. It is mentioned that OEMs can customize this reference design and thus release Microsoft smartphones easily
- page 18: under paragraph named "Local MPx" the future of Motorola MPx in UK is discussed. Link to (future) distributor of Motorola MPx is provided: http://windowsmobile.dangaard.com/ with information that Motorola MPx is still not availale in UK but some retailers will pick it from above mentioned distributgor in days to come. It is mentioned that no cellular operator in UK will carry Motorola MPx too - only through retailers and distributors one will be able to buy Motorola MPx
- page 37: big whole-page advertisement of i-mate JAM Pocket PC phone is published and paid by Expansys
- page 56: big photo of O2 Xda IIs Pocket PC phone - group test about using e-mail in mobiles
- page 63: using e-mail with O2 Xda IIs Pocket PC phone - described in detail - whole page dedicated to O2 Xda IIs ! It is underlined that thanks to built-in Wi-Fi it is possible to download (sometimes, in hotspots) some heavy (i.e. with attachments) emails much much faster than in most of the competition (that usually doesn't have built-in Wi-Fi). As one of advantages of Xda IIs the 1.3 megapixel camera is also mentioned (it's built-in too in this Pocket PC phone)
- page 64: results of the group test about e-mail using in mobiles are presented and O2 Xda IIs is the winner and beats Nokia 9300, Siemens SK65 and BlackBerry 7100v !
- page 69: contains big advertisement of T-Mobile MDA Compact Pocket PC phone that apparently is now on sale at T-Mobile UK! This advertisement has been paid by http://www.scancom.co.uk, that is also offering T-Mobile MDA Compact for customers in UK!
- page 72: on the whole page (!) the CoPilot Live for Microsoft Smartphone (a GPS based car nagivation software - works only in Windows Mobile) is described and big photo of Orange SPV C500 is presented.
- page 74: Pocket Slideshow for Pocket PC is described.
- page 75: AtlasCE for Microsoft Smartphone is described.
- page 76: TV Remote Controller program for Pocket PC is described. It turns your Pocket PC phone into infrared remote control.
