New version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC released but still it is no good March 26, 2005 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. While other news sources will just inform you that "new version released, new features are..." uncritically, we will not only tell you what changed and what still is missing, but will also show you it:
... and we will tell you why still Microsoft Reader is no good. On picture above you can see MS Reader of the latest version - 2.4 - and one of the main new features is ability to rotate automatically, when user (by using control panel) is rotating the whole display:
More information and other new features: Pocket PC users, please note that the new version of Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC (version 2.4) posted today is a bug fix release primarily intended for users of devices running Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 2003, Second Edition. While this version will run on all supported Pocket PC devices, we are only recommending that users of devices running these operating systems upgrade. Upgrading will not require reactivation of your Pocket PC device. Now you can get more from your eBooks on your Pocket PC device. This version includes updates for known performance issues, and adds exciting new features:
Commentary: Microsoft Reader is not that bad if you don't read copyrighted eBooks with it, and you don't need to activate it: after all Microsoft gives for free several dictionaries! However although it is nice that Microsoft is improving Pocket PC version of Microsoft Reader, still there is no version for Microsoft Smarpthone (although release of QVGA smartphones is imminent) and still the problems with activation exist: the Microsoft Reader still must be installed to main memory of the Pocket PC, not to the Storage Card or the program will not be activated! Activation is necessary in order to be able to buy and read copy protected eBooks. Also in area of reader activation Microsoft still is stuck in middle ages: it is cumbersome and one can activate only 4 devices, so if you have more devices or if you change your devices very often then Micorsoft Reader is not for you. Concluding we must admit that several other eBook readers are superior to Microsoft Reader! We recommend MobiPocket Reader or eReader - they are not only technologically superior to Microsoft Reader but they offer better usability and are multi-platform - so that you can use them also in non-Microsoft devices.
