Hardware review: i-mate PDA2k October 03, 2004 [Pocket PC phone] | By Edward J. R. Since getting MVP title from Microsoft Mauricio Freitas writes more about Microsoft cell phones on his make-believe "multi-platform" website. He is located in New Zealand where also Vodafone is active and while in Europe Vodafone wouldn't dare to sell PDA phones under i-mate brand, it is selling them there! So Mauricio got i-mate PDA2k Pocket PC Phone Edition (the same hardware as "T-Mobile MDA III") from Carrier Devices (brand owner of "i-mate") and he presents a review of it: The i-mate brand is popular in the Australia/New Zealand market, and it's the market brand of Carrier Devices. The company also distributes these devices in the Middle Eastern market. Where it's not present and where an operator is not selling the device, HTC sells it through its market brand, QTEK. I currently have a HP iPAQ 4150 and a i-mate Pocket PC Edition. One for its wireless LAN capabilities, the other for its WAN capabilities. The i-mate PDA2k successfully brings these features together and its automatic switching from GPRS to WLAN is an attractive feature to business users. Commentary: this is a typically biased interview where author gets a gadget and is told not to write anything negative about it - kind of a bribe. Author clearly doesn't mention short battery life, outdated VGA-only camera (contemporary standard: at least 1 megapixel) and an outdated processor (only 400 MHz, old generation PXA263, not contemporary generation: Intel Bulverde). Despite of this neglections clearly this model of Pocket PC phone is a top notch nowadays and it will be so until "T-Mobile MDA Compact" aka "i-mate JAM" will be released in November 2004...
