Do not buy Orange SPV C500, because...
August 23, 2004 [MS Smartphone] | By Edward J. R.

Well, Orange SPV C500 is a fantastic phone - it's tiny, very fast, with good quality of voice phone calls and generally, so apart from the lack of GSM850 band (that is used anyway only in USA), it seems to be perfect,

Windows Mobile team - pure fun

... but there is one thing, that for several users is a big "no-no" and disqualifies this phone:

... namely the new Orange SPV C500 (the first smartphone powered by latest version of Windows Mobile 2003 for Smartphone Second Edition) has a problem with GAPI , preventing most games from working well ? GAPI is a Game Application Programming Interface that Microsoft provides to allow for full-screen games, direct access to hardware buttons, etc.

While Orange and HTC are (supposedly) working on a firmware fix, game developers are trying to find a solution. Apparently OEM's and Operators (and Microsoft) rarely include games when doing their testing - after all they all think of Microsoft smartphones as phones for professionals/businessmen and not for gaming! But professionals/businessmen usually buy Pocket PC phones and smartphones are very much so used for mobile gaming!!! So again Microsoft pretty much misses the point.

This problem has been first observed at MoDaCo here and you can read more about it also here.

Conclusions: not only Orange SPV C500 has a cursor keys that are hardly usable for gaming (they can be used for gaming but with difficulty) but also operating system of Orange SPV C500 clearly is buggy as far as GAPI is concerned so plenty of existing games for Microsoft Smarpthone are not working. In other words: if you need to use this phone for gaming, then wait until Orange will release a ROM upgrade that fixes this problem. And since the problem lies in the latest version of operating system - Second Edition - it may well be that it will also be occuring in other upcoming Microsoft Smartphone phones ... like Motorola MPx220 and Sagem myS-7 ... so if you are a heavy gamer, be vigilant also in case of other smartphones with Second Edition !
