Open letter to Opera Software company June 17, 2004 [General] | By Edward J. R. Dear Opera Software, You are a nice company from Norway, Europe, a company that is producing partially multiplatform Internet browser called "Opera browser". Your browser is available also for Microsoft Windows platforms such as Windows XP, but not for Windows Mobile. It came to our attention lately, that Nokia decided to destroy your company, and in fact your sheer existence is at stake now, so we, fans of Microsoft's Windows Mobile devices, would like to invite you to dance:
... to dance with us! Nokia decided to ape Microsoft again (they call it in Finland "we have pulled a Microsoft again, HA HA.") and put their own Internet browser into Symbian Series 60 platform - platform that accounts nowadays for over 80% of smartphone sales worldwide. Their browser has the same features as your mobile Opera browser, like re-formatting of pages for better viewing, JavaScript, HTML, XHTML but it adds also another functionality like close integration with the platform and API for plug-ins. What does it mean to you, dear Opera Software? It means not only that Nokia betrayed you utterly, but also that your most important target market will be shrinking incredibly fast in coming months. It means that your sheer existence is at stake!!! Dear friends from Opera software, please don't make a common mistake and don't think of Finland (country where Nokia is located) as "Scandinavia"! All real Scandavians know very well that Scandinavia is a cultural region of Europe that includes Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark. Finns neither speak Scandinavian language nor are a part of your cultural circle. In fact they try to usurp being Scandinavian in that way, that they have the same word for "Scandinavian" and for "Nordic" in their language (it's "pohjolan"). Now they betrayed you - further confirming their hostility and insincerity. Is there any way out of this misery for you? Yes, there is! You should release Opera Internet browser also for Windows Mobile platforms, i.e. for Microsoft Smartphone and for Pocket PC. We warmly invite you to release versions of your browser for these Windows Mobile platforms!!! Since you already are producing Opera Internet browser for desktop versions of Windows, releasing Opera Internet browser for mobile versions of Windows should not be any major problem for you. With such release you would be able to secure your future, and you would be able to show to the world that you are a truly multi-platform company. --- yours sincerely, fans of Windows Mobile devices.
