Please note, that as far as memory ( expansion ) slot(s) are concerned: all (!) Microsoft smartphones have SD memory card slot. Since all of them have it, we have not added a column "memory slot" in the above table.

Explanation of columns in the above table:
  1. model name
this name is sometimes not known to broader public, but using this name allows to have common reference for the same device, that is branded and sold under different brand names

  2. hardware vendor
usually: not the one who is selling it, but the one who is producing it

  3. branded as
the name under which the smartphone is being sold; usually it can be sold under several names but we mention only some selected from the list, not all of them

  4. processor model
although all processors for Microsoft smartphone are more or less compatible with ARM core, it can happen, that for example 2 processors, that run at the same speed (in MHz) can execute programs with various speeds; another example: XScale processors are faster and consume less power than Strong-ARM processors; in other words: the model of the processor gives you a lot of information about how perfomant given smartphone will be

  5. processor speed
value in MHz, it is not always reflecting the execution speed of applications (see above), but generally gives good idea about how fast given processor is

  6. RAM memory
    value in MB

  7. ROM memory
    value in MB

  8. camera
    values: attachable, built-in, none

  9. built-in Bluetooth
    values: yes, no

  10. display quality
values: bad (milky, not sharp display), average (quite sharp, but still a bit milky), good (very sharp and vivid display)

  11. USB slot
    slot for connecting USB cable to connect the smartphone with desktop PC; values: industry standard mini-USB, proprietary; the mini-USB is best because in this way you can use one and the same cable for your smartphone and for other devices equipped with mini-USB slot, like digital camera or memory card reader;

  12. USB charging
ability to charge the phone through the USB cable, without the need to use separate power supply

  13. display after timeout
values: totally off (means: both backlight and display go off), backlight-only off; some phones, after certain timout are totally switching off the display - user must press something in order to see anything, even in good lighting conditinos; the other smartphones, notably the Compal AR11 never switch the display off, but just switch the backlight - in this way user can always peek at the phone, without the need to turn backlight on and without the need to touch the screen (assuming the lighting conditions are good and no backlight is needed to read the display) - some users find this feature important one

  14. weight
    values: weight in grams

  15. dimensions
values: width x length x depth; please note that sometimes depth is the most important factor - a smartphone that is thinner but a bit bigger overall may be much more comfortable to carry in the pocket

  16. integrated antenna
values: yes - antenna is inside of the case and not visible, no - antenna is external and protruding
Color coding: at given column level, cells in the table that have the same color denote the same feature, in this way it is easier to spot the differences, even from the distance without reading the text; please note: we use color coding only for those features that are most important in our opinion

All phones are GSM tri-band unless mentioned explicitly that they are CDMA (a GSM incompatible standard).

Please note: version of operating system, i.e. "Smartphone 2003" or "Smartphone 2002" has not been mentioned above because availability of given version depends on the operator or on the hardware vendor - some may chose to make it available while some may not.
